"Bones" is short for "bare bones", which is exactly what this template is - a stripped down, fixed-width template with very few trimmings, making it perfect as a starting point for designing your own template.

Note: This is beta version 0.1. Last updated Jan. 2nd 2009.

Points of interest:
  • The CSS file is commented so you know what you're looking at  Grin
  • The CSS file is 55% smaller than yget's stylesheet  Shocked
  • W3C CSS validated  Grin
  • It's free!

Let me know if you find any bugs so I can make changes. Thanks!

Thanks. This should be a replacement for yget in the SWCMS install. A good baseline to customize since no one should ever use the default anyways!

excellent addition (as usual)! This looks like a great starter template.

I like the idea of using this as a replacement for the yget template. This is a great starting point to creating your own personal template. The one issue is that it can be rather difficult and time consuming to develop a personal template, causing many young swcms (and pligg) startups to just keep the template that comes with swcms. So instead of having a bunch of ugly yget pligg sites out there, we will have a whole bunch of bare bones ones in their place. However, I still like the idea and would prefer lcd's template over the traditional yget.

Another option that would make SWCMS attractive to new webmasters would be:

  • Release this template with SWCMS install.
  • Have basic image/css module packs available to "plug in" to the bare bones template. Maybe make these available in the store to keep the main CMS install slim.

I think something like this was mentioned in the SWCMS blog for the future.

Replacing Yget or including Bones in the download will become a mute point after the template changes announced here: http://socialwebcms.com/blog/?p=48. Here's point #6 from that post:

Quote
A template manager with concepts similar to the module store. We’ll allow developers to upload their templates to a central repository - and we’ll include our templates as well. It’ll be a simple one click process - like the module store - to install a new template. When updates for your current template become available you’ll be notified through the admin interface.

For anybody following the Beta branch of the SVN, you'll see that the first 5 points made in that blog post are now finished, and I've reworked the Bones template to take advantage of the new shared templates system - in other words, it's down from over 50 files and 80 images to just 7 main files and 2 images. Yget has also been reduced to about the same number of files, making SWCMS much, much easier to design templates for. Send me a PM if you'd like a copy of the latest Bones template to try out on the Beta branch.
